Foreign News: Canada

The Canadian Press itself is an agency dedicated to growing audiences for any media company. Unfortunately, to look at this agency’s tools would require payment so investigation in a different news outlet was required. Canadian Television Network (CTV) is owned and operated by Bell Media, a Canada based content-creation company. Bell Media owns “30 local television stations and 29 specialty channels” according to https://www.bellmedia.ca/about-bellmedia/. Bell Media also has ownership in radio and Digital Media with 109 stations in 50 Canadian Markets. It is privately owned due to lack of a public investor page on their website.

Their news site, ctvnews.ca and they place a focus on international stories. One of their top news stories is the coronavirus. The team listed consists of two investigative correspondents, one special correspondent, two anchors, and some staff writers that aren’t listed. Upon reading the articles, this news site does not deviate from English. Considering they cover mostly foreign stories; it is an interesting choice that they stick to one language. The website itself has 8 tabs broken into News, Video, Local, Shows, Canadian Television Network News Channel, My News, Connect and About. Under their News page they have categories that span from Weather to Newsletters. For regular news and updates, one would click on that tab. The Video section is similar in that they organize their clips into categories based on subject/topic. Local breaks news into regions/territories. This tab is ideal for people looking for stories specifically catered to a certain area within Canada ex. Montreal and Vancouver. Overall, the new site is catered to inform seeking individuals about world problems and issues facing Canada.

Comparatively, its equivalent could come in the form of a couple of national United States news organizations. Cable News Network is also privately owned with eleven tabs, each one a different genre in the types of stories told: business, politics, world etc. save for the one tab that redirects visitors to their clips as well. While Cable News Network does have a tell world stories, that is not their sole focus. Additionally, they do not have an emphasis on local news but rather all national news. Given this is one of the major websites people visit, it makes sense that they would attempt to tell a breadth of stories rather than focus on one specific genre. Both Canadian Television Network and Cable News Network both use exclusively English in their news coverage but given that Cable News Network is much larger their network has a larger and more expansive staff than that of Canadian Television Network.

There are a few considerations in this research. Only one Canadian News and America News outlet were considered in comparing foreign news and domestic news. What would credibility be to look at the private and public sectors in foreign and domestic media. Other stations that should be considered in this should be the Canadian News Sites in the form of cbc.ca and globalnews.ca in conjunction with The New York Times and Fox News. The aforementioned news outlets are not only popular forms of media in their respective countries/territories but also provide insight into different ways of approaching media by certain news conglomerates. All in all, this assignment was enlightening in helping understand how news outlets in other countries view and write stories relevant to themselves and others based on where they are located, who their demographic is, and the size of their news organization. I look forward to learning more in the upcoming semester.
