Understanding American Sniper

The protagonist is first introduced as an American soldier about to take a shot in the army (plot point one), before the scene transitions into a brief recollection of how he ended up being a sniper. He is shown as a little boy killing for the first time. After his first kill, the protagonist is developed more by showing where his values came from: church and his father. His father is more conservative and encouraged him to fight for others, but only when it is right and necessary as seen in a response, he had to him defending his younger brother. After which, the movie speeds up to the characters call to action. Our protagonist witnesses a tragic explosion (the inciting incident) on television wherein he decides to enroll in nav seal training. When his training is complete, the protagonist meets the love of his life at a bar. They have time together and get married right before he is deployed to the war in Afghanistan. It is now the audience is reintroduced to the scene in which the protagonist makes the hard decision of sniping a little boy and his mother, who were attempt\ting to blowup a U.S. convoy with a grenade. He does his job well, eventually returning home. But the protagonist is very stressed out, and worried about the outcome of the war. The protagonist then returns to the war, to find out there is a distinguished sniper and ruthless lord butchering civilians and murdering U.S. soldiers (plot point two). This is beginning to shift the story in the direction of demonstrating the heroes’ military prowess outside of sniping enemies. This will not only humanize the character, but show a different side of him in the sense that he is older and now has a wife and kid waiting for him at home. After obtaining intel about the two fiends, our protagonist finds himself in the middle of a fight between the two, costing the lives of one father and one child. The other relevant characters come in the form of his battle buddies, some sharing different opinions on the war, others who were in training with him and finally his brother who also entered the service, seemingly shook from the war from a brief interaction he has with the main character.

Chris Kyle returns to the war one last time to hopefully complete his mission. He is once again faced with the challenges of war, coming with the losses of friends. But he ultimately defeats the butcher. He and his squad take position on top of a building surrounded by the enemy, when he notices something gleaming in the distance. Everyone tells him not to shoot, but he takes the shot knowing the enemy sniper is there. Chris Kyle succeeds in destroying the sniper but brings the attention of the enemy to the building with that shot. While attempting to escape, Chris makes a call to his wife stating that he is ready to come home. The protagonist finally comes home and feels misplaced, unsure of how he fits in with regular civilians anymore. But he then receives the suggestion to help veterans. He goes along doing this, leading a very happy and full life. However, one day he decides to go out into the field helping a veteran, one who murders him in cold blood. There is a funeral for him and the movie comes to an end. According to Fregyangs pyramid, the climax came when Chris Kyle finally killed “The Butcher” and was able to return home without any feelings of regret from leaving the war too early or not feeling lie he accomplished his mission. The falling action comes in the form of Chris Kyle speaking with a counselor about what happened in the war and how well he is dealing with it. Kyle wishes that he was only able to help/save more soldiers to which he is informed of his ability to help veterans. Chris now realizes his new purpose as a sheepdog: to help veterans. After fulling embracing this epiphany, he relocates his family and has a new founded family life. He spends his days helping veterans recover and loving his family. The catastrophe occurs when the veteran he spends time with kills him.
